In a nutshell, this year’s trends are aimed at embedding our digital strides even deeper into the organization’s processes, mindset, and culture, as well as making innovative technology and new ways of working more widely (and securely) available. It’s an exciting next part of the journey, in which the focus is shifting from exploring new technology to making it a part of everyday operations. We can’t wait to get started!
I. Engineering Culture
Engineering culture is an inclusive and safe organizational culture that fosters talent and is driven by sharing and equality to achieve the impossible.
Be prepared to hear many more business professionals talk about ‘engineering culture’ this year. After focusing on the digital side of business transformation, the time has come to shift our efforts toward getting our operational practices on par. Improving software delivery, rethinking your operating model, creating continuity, and working on an epic work environment that enables knowledge-sharing will make it easier for you to attract and retain talent and produce much faster, cheaper, and better.
II. Cloud-Native Software Development
Cloud-native software development is the way to develop or modernize applications to make them cost-effective, secure and performant, by making optimal use of the cloud.
Whether you’re a developer or a business owner, in 2023, you should familiarize yourself with the perks of cloud-native development — one of the major ones being cost reduction, closely followed by the doors it opens to services that are readily available in the cloud, like compute, massive storage and AI. Currently, only 20-30% of businesses are using Cloud technology. However, we expect this number will steadily increase over the next five years. Cloud-native software development will gain momentum, as even governments are now moving towards a public-cloud-first strategy.
III. Supply Chain Security (and BitRot)
Supply chain security describes the need to protect your company from hackers trying to compromise software as early as the production stage.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that hackers are becoming smarter and sneakier by the minute. Technology is evolving, our security know-how is growing, and as a result, those with malicious intent keep looking for new ways to get into our systems. Constantly monitoring and optimizing your software (and development environment) is a must to prevent BitRot and ensure secure solutions for your users. A significant portion of the software you run in production wasn’t written by your company (e.g., operating system, web server, frameworks and packages). Be sure to know where the software comes from and that you can trust its authors.
IV. Platform Engineering
Platform engineering is the creation of platforms, such as an intelligence infrastructure or architecture platform, with the primary goal of supporting DevOps teams.
To date, about 36% * of software development teams across the globe practice DevOps — a number we expect to increase rapidly. But, as more companies get ready to embrace DevOps, a significant challenge has emerged: its high cognitive load. Turns out, not every company that’s keen to adopt DevOps is equipped to meet that requirement. So, how can these companies also reap the benefits of DevOps, such as faster delivery and higher-quality code? Platform engineering is the answer. This specialism takes pain points and turns them into automated tasks that the team can easily access via a self-service platform without prior knowledge.
